December 2 — Learn “What’s Burning? Immediate International Priorities on 20 January 2009.”
We’ve been so preoccupied lately wondering whether he can salvage capitalism that we have forgotten what a foreign policy mess President Obama will inherit when he takes office. Who better to explain the challenges than the head of the National War College’s Department of Security Studies?
When: Tuesday December 2, 5:45 refreshments; 6:30 dinner; 7:30 presentation
Where: Woodstock Club
This is the Indianapolis Committee on Foreign Relations’ final dinner and speaker of the year, and it should be a good one. See the info below about RSVP-ing. For this dinner, non-members of ICFR can pay the member’s rate. For more information: courtenay@cweldon.net
Having joined the faculty of the National War College in August 1992, Cynthia Watson served for five years as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, then for Curriculum and Faculty Development.
She is currently the Chairman of NWC’s Department of Security Studies.
Dr. Watson studies China-Taiwan in Latin America, civil-military relations and China in the international system. Dr. Watson earned a BA from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, a MA from the London School of Economics, and a doctorate from the University of Notre Dame. Before joining the National War College, Dr. Watson was Assistant Dean for Social Sciences and taught in the Department of Political Science at Loyola University Chicago. She has also taught Politics at Ithaca College.
Additionally, Dr. Watson has worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office and U.S. House of Representatives. She is on the Governing Boards of a number of professional organizations and the Editorial Board of Third World Quarterly. Her books, U.S. National Security and Nation-Building, were published in 2002 and 2004. In 2006-2007, she published four volumes on U.S. Military Service, Professional Military Education, Nation-Building and Stability Operations, and U.S. National Security (2nd edition). She is currently completing a two volume set on combatant commands.
Why does Provocate think you should attend this event?
Cynthia Watson is very respected, and has emerged as a leading expert on important aspects of Chinese behavior (its competitive relations with Taiwan, its unceasing quest for natural resources in Latin America and Africa). She should give a good balanced perspective of the military challenges. And keep in mind that even before he has taken the oath, Obama has frustrated many of his more enthusiastic supporters with his foreign policy choices.
