November 19 — “The Russian-Georgian War: Origins, Meanings, and Prospects for the USA”
After worrying about “Russia Resurgent” for 15 years, this year we got to see something of what it will look like: a giant whacking and whacking on a pesky smaller neighbor. Depressing, but something we should care about? (The answer is “yes”).
When: Wednesday November 19, socializing and lubricating 5:30 PM; dinner 6:30 PM; talk 7:15 PM
Where: The Marten House Conference Center (Just East of St. Vincent Hospital) 1801 West 86th Street Indianapolis, IN 46260
This talk will be given by Prof. Michael Smith of Purdue’s history department. He’ll address the connection of the conflict in the Caucausus to Russian domestic politics, oil politics, and global strategic rivalries.
From Purdue’s web:
Michael Smith received his Ph.D. in Russian history from Georgetown University in 1991. His research interests include Soviet nationalities and language policies (with a focus on Azerbaijan), the Russian revolution and Bolshevik culture, and the comparative dimensions of Russian and American rocketry, space science, and astronautics. His book, Language and Power in the Creation of the USSR, 1917-1953 appeared in Mouton de Gruyter’s series, Contributions to the Sociology of Language (Berlin and New York, 1998). He has recently published a series of articles and book chapters on the Russian revolution in Baku, Azerbaijan. He is currently working on a new research project, taking shape in book and article manuscripts: “Russian and American Approaches to Rocketry and Space Travel in the Twentieth Century.”
