September 18 — Does Christianity have a future in Europe?
“Does Christianity have a future in Europe?” Of course it does … but is that future bright, bleak, or something different? Dutch philosopher Evert van der Zweerde explores.
When: Tuesday, September 18 7:00-9:00 PM
Where: Butler University, Krannert Room of Clowes Memorial Hall 4602 Sunset Ave, Indianapolis, IN
Admission is free.
When people worry about the future of Christianity in Europe, their anxieties are often more than theological. Some fear that Christians aren’t having enough babies relative to non-Christians (read Muslims) … in other words, an demographic problem for white Europeans. Others worry that Christianity is being pushed into irrelevancy in European culture by a bland secularism. Still others more dynamic and vibrant non- or semi-Christian religions will attract more young adherents (of all ethnic groups).
Dr. Evert van der Zweerde is a philosopher and culturologist with expertise in both Western and Eastern European studies. He teaches at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Respondent: Rev. Indulis Paics is a pastor at Martin Luther Church in Riga, Latvia.
This is part of Butler University’s Seminar on Religion and World Civilization. The 2007–08 seminar series is “Secularism and Religion in Global Perspective.”
Kn ow before you go … Read some current news articles about Muslims in Europe. MSNBC and BBC have interactive features on Muslims in Europe. And as is so often the case, the good people at Wikipedia have a useful summary and links.
If this sounds interesting, check out … the discussion of Islam in another chunk of Europe, Turkey, on October 16, or in South and West Asia November 5.
