September 5 — “Urban Times” Artist Reception and Open Studio Night at the Harrison Center for the Arts.

The Harrison Center for the Arts launches its fall season with “Urban Times,” a remarkable exploration of Indianapolis life through sculpture, photography, video, and other media. You can help set 100 55-gallon drums ablaze as part of the “Light the Way” public art project. The evening will also highlight the newsletter “Urban Times,” which has been crucial for the revitalization of Indy’s downtown neighborhoods. Plus it’s open studio night, which means plenty of free wine and crackers from artists who’ll be happy to help you expand your art collection.

When: Friday, September 5, 6 to 10pm

Where: Harrison Center for the Arts, 1505 N. Delaware Indianapolis

The Harrison Center for the Arts kicks off the fall art season with Urban Times, Friday, September 5, 2008 from 6 to 10pm. The Harrison Gallery will feature sculpture by Lori Miles and Indianapolis urban themed photography by Craig McCormick. McCormick’s new photographs are a visual study of ‘economic entropy’ in Indianapolis and surrounding communities. These photos depict natural change in urban, suburban and ex-urban environments caused by natural forces in economics, demographics and the perceptions of the citizens in these places. Miles’ work investigates the in-between spaces we encounter and the startling stillness of those moments. Transitions, pauses, and absences are privileged over the substantive. Issues of thresholds are explored further by using objects in physical transition- when deprived of their original function, objects often become decorative, a shift marked by diminished scale.

Gallery No. 2 will feature Stop, Watch - a video piece by Jim Walker that takes patient, static looks at several unconventionally scenic locations in the city and Hank & Dolly’s Gallery will feature Mark Pack – Painting Specimens.

In the courtyard, Great Ideas public art project winners will create their public art project, Light the Way, with the community’s help. 100 55-gallon drums, will be transformed into luminaries during the evening event. The luminaries will light a variety of community spots until their reunion at Kennedy King Park in the fall.

Throughout the building we will showcase work that celebrates the impact of Urban Times, a downtown newsletter which has played a major role in strengthening connections between neighborhood and community life downtown. Urban Times serves as the official neighborhood newsletter for nine historic districts in Indianapolis Chatham Arch, Lockerbie Square, The Old Northside, Herron-Morton Place, St. Joseph, Meridian Park, Ransom Place, Cottage Home and Woodruff Place. Urban Times also is an advocate for the cultural districts where many of the participating artists live and work.

In the gym, neighborhoods, cultural districts, and friends of both will promote their residential and commercial opportunities. This will be a “one stop shop” for information about downtown neighborhoods, schools, real estate and more. Join the fun of living and working downtown.

Also that night, 21 open artist studios, live music, social justice, and much more.
