Pierre Atlas, Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center for Global Studies at Marian University, kicks off the Indiana Council on World Affairs 2012 Great decisions series. The popular revolts and upheaval of the Arab Spring have radically changed the face of the Middle East. What lies ahead for the Middle East’s transition to democracy? What are the prospects for the governments that have held out in this new order? With many longtime U.S. allies ousted, how will the U.S. recalibrate its relations with the new regimes?

Pierre M. Atlas is an associate professor of political science and director of The Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center for Global Studies at Marian University. He also writes a monthly opinion column on national and international affairs for The Indianapolis Star. Atlas earned his Ph.D. in political science from Rutgers University, specializing in the Middle East. He also holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in political science from the University of Arizona and the University of Toronto, respectively.
